NFL Week 2 ft. the Pittsburgh Steelers

So, it’s begun.

The Steelers tied with the Cleveland freakin’ Browns last week and lost to the Kansas City Chiefs this week.

You know, what’s ironic is that I was so excited for the NFL season to start, but yet I’m already ready for it to be over. It’s a long season and I’m being dramatic, but still.

The Steelers lost today, 42-37, and I’ve said ‘I hate the Steelers’ I don’t know how many times today. The truth is, I almost went to Pittsburgh this weekend for the home opener so that I could escape Hurricane Florence. It’s a good thing that I stayed put.

Okay, so I don’t really hate the Steelers. I love the Steelers. I love the Steelers so much that it hurts. I’ve never known one team to have so much talent, but even more drama.

Do I think that the Steelers would’ve lost last week against the Cleveland Browns if Le’Veon Bell were on the field? Nope. This isn’t a dig against James Conner. Conner, who is in his second year in the league, rushed for 135 yards last week against the Browns. Amidst the Bell drama, he proved his worth. But he’s no Le’Veon Bell. I mean, there’s only one Le’Veon Bell. Speaking of, where in the heck is Le’Veon Bell? Okay, that’s enough. Conner, a Pennsylvania native and former Pittsburgh Panther, has already won over the hearts of Steelers fans due to his astounding perseverance. In 2015, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. In 2018, he’s the starting running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I like him and I like the way that he’s performed.

Also, I know that I’m not the only one who thinks that its bizarre that NFL games can end in ties. I know that I should be grateful because if it weren’t for this rule, the Steelers could’ve easily lost to the Browns last week. I also understand that the league doesn’t want games going on and on and on, but come on, a tie? I feel like a tie makes everything more difficult. I feel like tying with the Browns is going to come back and bite the Steelers in the butt at the end of the regular season when it comes to playoff seeding. Better yet, today’s loss to the Chiefs means that the Steelers’ home playoff field advantage percentage lowered. I know that it’s still early, but it’ll matter.

I thought that after tying with the Browns last week the Steelers would come to their senses. I thought wrong. At the end of the first quarter in today’s matchup in Pittsburgh, the Steelers were down 21-0. Strangely, I wasn’t too discouraged. That’s just how the Steelers play. They like to dig themselves in a deeeeeeeeeep hole to see if they can climb out of it. I really don’t know if the Steelers know what it means to play consistent. I guess that the good thing is that you can never fully count the Steelers out because they’re always one amazing catch by Antonio Brown away from being back in the game.

At halftime of today’s game, the score was tied at 21. I really can’t explain it. That’s what I mean when I say that you can’t count them out. Unfortunately, Big Ben and AB weren’t enough to overpower Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. I don’t even know what the Steelers defense was doing. Mahomes is a beast. His arm is incredible. The past two games for him have almost been too good to be true, so good that I’m almost unsure if he can keep putting up the type of numbers that he has been in the first two weeks for the rest of the season. I just came across an article that said that Mahomes record-setting stats are no fluke, so there’s that. But we’ll see. Honestly I’m just annoyed because there’s been a lot of talk about Big Ben not being as good as he used to be, which is natural because he’s getting older, but I wish that the Steelers had a Patrick Mahomes that could replace Big Ben whenever he retires. Actually, I’m not too discouraged because I really like the potential that the future holds with Josh Dobbs and Mason Rudolph.

The Steelers defense couldn’t stop Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, so Big Ben couldn’t do what he usually does — a game-winning drive. I guess that it’s kind of reassuring to think about how the Steelers only lost by five, even though the entire team didn’t show up in the first quarter and the defense actually playing defense was a rarity. Not to mention that Mahomes threw for 326 yards and six touchdowns. The score could’ve been much worse than it was, but a loss is still a loss. No game on any NFL schedule is considered to be an “easy win”, but especially if you look at Pittsburgh’s next game. The Steelers are traveling to Tampa Bay (2-0) next week for Monday Night Football. Greeeaaat. Ryan Fitzpatrick is on fire. But like I said, you can’t count the Steelers out.

In today’s game Antonio Brown was yelling at the offensive coordinator on the sideline and he left the locker room before the media came in, even though he’s usually the last player out. It’s understandable though. He’s frustrated. An 0-1-1 start wasn’t exactly expected. A talk show host in Pittsburgh that I follow on Twitter has been going in on both Le’Veon Bell and Antonio Brown. He’s called them both selfish and today he tweeted that Brown helps the team more than he hurts the team, so that is why the Steelers deal with it. I don’t know the truth to his tweets because he has no evidence to back it up. He’s not the only reporter that I’ve seen call Bell selfish, but he’s the only one that I’ve seen call Brown selfish. He’s a Steelers fan, so I’m not really sure if it’s true or if he’s just angry about the never-ending drama that seems to surround the team. I don’t even want to try to delve into the Bell drama, but as a fan I can say that I wish that he would get on the field because even though the Steelers have a better win percentage with Bell off of the field, they’re better with him on it. I’m not really sure if that makes sense, but yeah. But Bell is free to do whatever he chooses and if he doesn’t want to take the risk and injure himself before he has the chance to leave Pittsburgh, that’s fine. It sucks, but it’s fine.

I think that the Steelers will be 1-1-1 after next Monday night. You know I’m so superstitious that I don’t even like to say, write, or even think anything about a game because I don’t want to speak too soon. So scratch that. The Pittsburgh Steelers aren’t a 0-1-1 team, so that’s going to be enough fuel for them. Well, technically they are a 0-1-1 team, but with the amount of talent that they have they know that they shouldn’t be. I don’t know if I should wear my JuJu jersey next week because it’s 0-2-1. I’m pretty close to buying an Antonio Brown jersey instead. So far my JuJu jersey has witnessed two embarrassingly similar losses to the Jaguars and Chiefs. The Browns tie is just as embarrassing too because, well, it’s the Browns.

Okay, I’m not entirely sure what the point of this blog post was. I’m going to try to be more organized in my future blog posts. I think that I just needed to ramble this week because I’m not really sure what else to do after an 0-1-1 start.

There’s always next week, or at least we can hope.

A new journey

Hi, my name is Jordy and I’m a recent graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I currently reside in North Carolina, but I’m looking to relocate to a city once I find a job. I’m here because I graduated four months ago and I don’t want to stop doing one of my favorite things — writing about sports. I’m unusual because I’m a Tar Heel, Pittsburgh Steeler, and also an anything that has to do with the NBA-er. It’s week two of the NFL and the NBA begins in about a month, so the fun is just beginning. If anyone would like to connect with me my email is clarkjm3@live.unc.edu. Cheers to the world of sports blogging!
